By ABC 11(08/09/04) Raleigh -Beginning in the 2005-06 school year, all North Carolina traditional school will start classes later. Governor Easley signed the New School Calendar Law into effect.

It mandates traditional calendar school can not begin classes before August 25th and must end no later than June 10th, adding about two weeks to vacations. The tourism industry lobbied for the new legislation. But not everyone is behind it.

Opponents contend the measure would shortchange teachers and students and would cost up to $205 million a year in lost productivity. Teachers, who now get up to 20 work days a year, would get 15.

The law is supported by North Carolina's tourism industry, the North Carolina Association of Educators and a parents' group.
